Best SEO Agency in New York
The questions that actually separate them
Do they show you the work, or only the results?
Ask for a month of actual deliverables from a live account, redacted. An agency that cannot show what it did all month is usually not doing very much.
Who is on your account after the pitch?
The most common failure in this industry is a senior team that sells and a junior team that delivers. Ask for names, and ask to meet them before signing.
Do they guarantee rankings?
Nobody can. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking. An agency promising it is either inexperienced or dishonest, and neither is what you want.
Can they explain what they would not do?
Competence shows up as much in what an agency declines. If everything you suggest is a great idea, you are being sold to rather than advised.
Do they own or rent your accounts?
Analytics, Search Console, Google Ads and your domain should be in your name with them granted access. Agencies that hold your accounts hostage exist and you will not find out until you leave.
What happens to the work if you leave?
Content, pages and technical fixes should stay with you. Anything hosted on the agency's own platform disappears when the contract does.
Do they understand your compliance regime?
In healthcare, finance, legal or education, an agency that has not read the relevant rules is a liability rather than an asset.
Is the reporting about outcomes or activity?
Impressions and rankings are inputs. Enquiries, qualified leads and revenue are outcomes. A report full of the former usually hides an absence of the latter.
What is the notice period?
Twelve-month lock-ins with a ninety-day notice clause are a way of surviving a client's disappointment rather than preventing it.
What you’re actually choosing between
| Option | What you get | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Large national agencies | Deep resources and process. You are one of many accounts, and the seniority you meet in the pitch is rarely the seniority you get. | Best when you need scale and have internal marketing leadership to direct them. |
| Manhattan boutique agencies | Strong creative and local network, at a price that includes Midtown overheads. Often excellent, rarely cheap. | Best when the address and the network genuinely matter to your buyers. |
| Freelancers and small consultancies | Direct access to the person doing the work, at the lowest cost. Single point of failure, and a narrow skill range. | Best for one clear problem — a technical audit, a migration — rather than an ongoing programme. |
| Corunit | Fifteen named specialists on Long Island, working across search, paid media, web, CRM and reputation. Senior people stay on the account. No Midtown overhead. | Best when you want one team across several channels and are comfortable with an agency you will mostly meet on video. |
